National Hospital Insurance Fund is a State Parastatal that was established in 1966 as a department under the Ministry of Health.The Fund's core mandate is to provide medical insurance cover to all its members and their declared dependants (spouse and children).
What does the Plan cover?
The plan covers both in-patient and out-patient, though in-patient cover is the main cover. It also covers Maternity and chronic illness.
Who is eligible for the cover?
All Kenyans who:
Are 18 years and above
Have a monthly income of more than KES 1000.
What plans does NHIF have?
NHIF contributors can be categorized into two:
Salaried employees-These are individuals with formal employment.For this group contribution is mandatory, with contributions based on a graduated scale on income and automatically deducted through payroll.
Voluntary category - These are individuals with no formal employment.For such members, they pay KES 500 per month

NHIF has accredited over 2000 health providers. The health care providers have been categorizing of the contract they have signed with NHIF. They include:
Contract A facility - Mainly government hospitals.
Contract B facility - Mainly faith-based and mission hospitals
Contract C facility - Mainly private hospitals
