What is Insurance?

Written by Ruth Njiri

Insurance is a form of risk management that protects you against losses in the case of an incident or accident. Insurance transfers the cost of that potential loss from you to the insurance company in exchange for monetary compensation.

In order to handle these losses, insurance companies invest the funds paid to them securely so that they are able to pay when they have a claim. An insurance claim is a formal request to an insurance company asking for a payment based on the terms of the insurance policy to cover the losses in the incident or accident. The insurance policy is a contract that details the terms and conditions in which the insurance company is obligated to pay.
